Braces Assumptions | Brace Care | Oldham | Manchester Orthodontics

Before treatment, a lot of patients will make assumptions about what to expect. Some of these will be correct but a lot of times they’re very wrong.

There’s plenty of myths and false facts out there regarding braces and orthodontic treatment. So we’re here to set the record straight and break down the barriers.

Assumption #1 - Braces must hurt

Braces work by moving your teeth into a more desirable and straight position. Obviously this can cause some discomfort but it shouldn't hurt or cause a lot of pain. It’s more than bearable and can be eased with regular painkillers like ibuprofen or paracetamol.

Assumption #2 - Metal braces will set off metal detectors

The metal used in braces is typically not the same metal that they are looking to detect. It’s very unlikely you will set them off so no need to worry the next time you go to the airport!

Assumption #3 - Adults can’t get braces

This is completely false! Anyone of any age can get braces and there are lots of options out there too. If you’re an adult looking to get braces, we also offer discreet appliances like ceramic braces and Invisalign, so you can get the straight teeth you want without having braces showing.

Assumption #4 - Braces are only used to fix crooked teeth

While braces do fix crooked teeth, they can also help a variety of other dental problems. Issues like overbites, underbites, jaw discrepancies and missing teeth can all be helped by braces.

Assumption #5 - You can’t eat or drink properly with braces

Another false fact! Having braces doesn’t affect your normal diet or how you eat. However you do have to be cautious of sticky or hard foods as they could potentially bend or break your appliance.

Assumption #6 - Braces permanently straighten your teeth

Braces work wonderfully to straighten your teeth and correct bite, but that doesn’t mean it’ll last forever. Sometimes your teeth will move back after braces are removed so it’s vital you wear a retainer to maintain their position.
