Lingual Braces | Oldham Orthodontics

Lingual braces are a lesser known orthodontic option that have practical and cosmetic advantages when compared to alternative braces. They have some similarities to other braces, but because they are fitted on the back of the teeth rather than the front where traditional braces are placed, they have some differences with respect to comfort, fit and ability to be discreet.

What are lingual braces?

Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces in that brackets and wires are fixed onto the teeth to fix misalignments. However, lingual braces differ because they are almost entirely invisible. They are placed on the backs of the teeth (the lingual surface) rather than the front of the teeth. Because of this, lingual braces allow for a more discreet option for orthodontic patients not wanting to wear traditional braces for a lengthy amount of time. They are gaining popularity for this reason, for both children and adults.

How lingual braces are placed

The brackets used with lingual braces are customised to fit each patient’s mouth perfectly, using an impression of the teeth, and must be fitted to each individual tooth to properly correct misalignments.

Having the perfect fit is essential when it comes to installing lingual braces because the brackets and wires are more challenging to place. The backs of the teeth are harder to reach, and there is less room for the orthodontist to work.

How long will I have lingual braces in?

The length of your orthodontic treatment will vary depending on your individual needs. In most cases treatment takes 12-18 months, but it could take as little as 6 months if you are only looking to straighten mild crowding. Your orthodontist should be able to give you an accurate estimate of how long your treatment will take during your initial consultation.

What foods should I avoid while wearing lingual braces?

As a general rule, you should avoid eating anything hard chewy or sticky. Top offenders include crusty bread, toffee, and chewing gum. Sticky foods will cling to your brace and be difficult to remove; while hard, chewy foods can remove brackets, resulting in a special trip to see your orthodontist. You will actually find that you can still enjoy most foods; you will just need to cut them up into smaller pieces before enjoying.
