Diastema

What is Diastema?

Diastema is the medical term for a gap of more than 0.5 mm in any of your teeth. Diastema can appear in both adults and children, but will usually close as people age. It is not compulsory to get this condition treated as it poses no risks or health hazards. However, you may choose to get treated for diastema if you don’t like the appearance of it.

There are many treatment options to fix Diastema but first let’s explore some causes, symptoms and prevention.

Causes Of Diastema

Genetics - Genetics is the most common cause of Diastema

Gum Disease - Some advanced gum diseases can trigger multiple reactions in your jawbone, resulting in ‘gappier’ teeth.

Tooth Size & Growth Issues - Missing teeth and abnormal teeth size can lead to Diastema.

Symptoms Of Diastema

  • Visible gap between the teeth
  • Loose teeth maybe with some pain or discomfort
  • Swollen or receding gums
  • Bad breath

Prevention

Like most dental issues, Diastema can be prevented with good oral hygiene, daily brushing, flossing and also regular visits to your dentist.

Treatment Options for Diastema

Metal Braces

Traditional braces are a proven treatment for the gaps in teeth and other dental discrepancies. They put gradual pressure on your teeth over a period of time to better align them.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are practically the same as metal braces, except they are attached to the back of the tooth. The process is the same but allows the patient to undergo orthodontics with a more discreet treatment.

Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign works like braces, the difference being that they are invisible to others as they are made of clear plastic. Clear aligners are popular amongst teens and young adults.
