With so much more free time on their hands, we’ve noticed many people have taken up new hobbies during lockdown. Hobbies like sewing, cycling, learning a new language, yoga, gardening. But we’re interested in one particular hobby: Baking.
We all love a sweet treat now and then, but it’s important for our patients undergoing orthodontic treatment to know which baked goods they can and can’t consume.
Treats like Rocky Road or Honeycomb tend to be hard and brittle meaning they can damage your braces by bending or breaking them. Whereas other treats will have such high sugar content it can be detrimental to your oral health as a whole.
So we’ve decided to gather together a few baking recipes you can follow which are 1. yummy and 2. won’t cause damage to your braces.
Victoria Sponge Cake
Victoria Sponge Cake, or any sponge cake for that matter, is one of the best options for brace patients. Allowing you to enjoy something sweet without putting your braces at risk.

Soft Oatmeal Cookies
We recommend steering clear of cookies that are hard as they could potentially break your brace. Oatmeal cookies, however, are a great cookie because not only do they cook softer but they tend to have lower sugar content too.

Now if you’re someone who wears braces but also likes fruit, then apple crumble is a fantastic option. Any baked good with cooked, soft fruit is perfectly safe for braces and poses no threat of breaking them.
