Invisalign Braces & Overbite | Oldham Orthodontics

Invisalign is one of the hidden braces that we have available here at Oldham Orthodontics. Invisalign are clear plastic aligners, which makes them very popular for adult patients who may not like the idea of having traditional metal braces. However, Invisalign is also available to younger patients who prefer a discreet brace option. Some patients come to us to ask whether Invisalign can help fix their underbite and the answer is yes. Read this blog to learn more.

What is an underbite?

If you bite down and your top teeth rest behind your bottom teeth, you most likely have an underbite. This type of malocclusion isn’t uncommon as we see many patients come to us asking for treatment to correct it. This type of bite can cause patients to experience pain and discomfort. Others also feel some self-consciousness from the way that their bite affects the appearance of their face.

An underbite can be caused by a range of things such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing, the way the jaw has grown, but the most common cause is genetics.

Can I prevent an underbite?

As genetics are the main cause, there is not much you can do to prevent the development of an underbite, other than stopping chewing on pens or your thumb. You can, however, fix an underbite with braces.

Invisalign

Invisalign can fix most underbite cases if they are not too severe. If they are severe, then it would be recommended that you have jaw surgery combined with brace treatments such as Invisalign or metal braces. If your underbite isn’t too severe, then you should be okay to have Invisalign without surgery. The clear braces would apply pressure to the teeth to gradually correct the bite, whilst straightening your teeth.

Jaw surgery

Jaw surgery works to realign the jaw when braces aren’t an option. It is performed by a maxillofacial surgeon who will make an incision into your jaw, so they can move it into the correct position. Additional shaping of the jaw bone may also be required.

Functional braces

Functional braces are one of the removable braces we have available. They are more suited to younger patients as they encourage your jaw to grow in order to give the patient the best bite.
