Lockdown FAQ | Oldham | Manchester Orthodontics

How can I look after my braces during lockdown?

It’s very important that you look after your braces while in lockdown to help reduce the need for emergency appointments. Here are a few things you can do to avoid breaking or damaging your brace:

  • Avoid hard, sticky or chewy foods. This includes toffees, hard boiled sweets and some chocolates. Foods like carrots and apples can be cut up into smaller chunks before eating.
  • Prevent damage to the tooth enamel and gums by keeping up with a good oral hygiene routine. This means brushing 3 times a day, using floss and mouthwash.
  • Avoid sugary snacks between meals and before you sleep.
  • Avoid high sugar drinks like fizzy pop and fruit juice

Will my treatment be prolonged if I cannot see my orthodontist?

Aside from other factors, the duration of your treatment can be extended if you are unable to see your orthodontist on a regular basis. Given the current circumstance, our patients should be warned that it is more than likely their orthodontic treatment to be prolonged. We still recommend you follow instructions provided by your orthodontist relating to the care and maintenance of your orthodontic brace.

Can I have a telephone/video consultation with an orthodontic clinician?

When you call the practice, we will try our best to resolve your brace issues over the phone. If more advice is needed however, we are offering telephone and video consultations with our orthodontists.

How do I decide whether I need an emergency appointment to see my orthodontist?

Patients will typically encounter a few problems with their braces during orthodontic treatment. A majority of these issues are minor, won’t compromise your progress and can often be resolved at your next appointment. Now obviously, due to the pandemic, our patients can’t attend routine appointments. If you are worried about your brace, call us on 0161 768 0931 and we can discuss your problem. If we feel an emergency appointment is needed, we will sort one for you as best we can.

Our phone line is open between the hours of 9am and 5pm, so if you have any further questions then please do get in touch.
